Miley Cyrus has ‘forgotten Jesus’

Miley Cyrus once confessed Jesus as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized in a Southern Baptist church, and as a young girl regularly attended church and wore a purity ring. This all occurred before she moved to Hollywood in 2005. After last night’s VMA performance I think it’s safe to say she has been “devoured” (1 Peter 5:8).

I didn’t watch the VMA’s, nor have I watched a replay of the Miley “performance”. I don’t have cable (thankfully), and was enjoying the Sunday night NFL pre-season game on NBC. But I do keep up with social media, and when #MileyCyrus was trending today (alongside #Syria no less), I ended up reading an article about the whole escapade.

But her performance isn’t the subject of this blog post. I’ll leave coverage of that to the more tawdry bloggers out there.

I aim to answer a question more pertinent to my blog’s subject matter: how can a girl who gives her life to Jesus end up this way?

Is she just a product of poor parenting? Billy Ray would likely “achy break your neck” if he heard you place fault with him. As our loving God and spiritual father weeps for ALL of us when we miss the mark, I’m sure no one is weeping more today than he.

Do we blame her move to Hollywood? Partially, of course. But you can’t shelter someone their entire life, and it’s unfair to place all the blame for her actions with other people.

To know what has happened to Miley we only have to look at her own words. In March 2012, she tweeted:

‘You are all stardust. You couldn’t be here if stars hadn’t exploded, because the elements (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, all the things that matter for evolution) weren’t created at the beginning of time. They were created in stars. So forget Jesus. Stars died so you can live.’

Granted, these words are not original to Miley. This quote is from renowned atheist Lawrence Krauss in his work, “A Universe from Nothing.” The significance that Miley would share the quote, though, is at least a tacit endorsement in it’s philosophy. She has traded Jesus, and the belief that there is something greater than ourselves that created the cosmos, for the atheistic “me, myself, and I” attitude that we ultimately came from nothing, and are going nowhere.

All though she later deleted the tweet after it upset many fans, the damage was done. Whether she was merely being a philosophical teen isn’t the point. The words are there: “So forget Jesus.” When Miley decided to “twerk” on stage at the VMA’s with Robin Thicke- (a married 36-year old father who should have known better and is equally accountable), she had forgotten Jesus in her pursuit for attention, and that decision was hers alone.

The good news for Miley is Jesus never forgets her. She has a long life ahead of her, God willing, and He will always accept her back.

Ironically, many people- many of whom are non-Christians- say Miley crossed a line at the VMA’s. The problem is “the line” has been so blurred by those that have come before her in the industry in which she is trying to make a living, how can we suddenly expect anything better from her? If one’s only moral example is a blurry one, with no definite right and wrong, even knowing where the line exists is an impossible pursuit.

Update 8/29/2013: My article focuses on Miley Cyrus’ actions because as a professed believer in Jesus Christ her actions are more relevant to my blog. However, Robin Thicke’s actions were just as crude, and an even worse example to all of our boys and young men. The following linked blog by Matt Walsh sums up that sentiment concerning Thicke perfectly.
> Dear son, don’t let Robin Thicke be a lesson to you
